Amy Warren backpacks across the Grand Canyon after her husband serves her with divorce papers for her fiftieth birthday. She must rebuild her shattered self-confidence and gears up to face extreme heat, rock slides, and rattlesnakes. Her adventure turns dangerous when she finds a mangled body in a ravine and a series of suspicious events stalks her along the trail.

A new friend, Sarah Rochon, epitomizes the outdoors woman Amy aspires to be. She thwarts the theft of Amy’s gear at the Phoenix airport, and the women join forces to confront the dangers of the canyon. The attentions of a rugged park ranger, Glen Hawk, threatens the friendship, but Amy rebuffs him.

In a remote arm of the canyon, a deranged man hunts down the women. On a narrow ledge, Sarah battles the knife-wielding attacker in hand-to-hand combat. Amy watches in horror, and clings by her fingernails to the edge of the abyss.

First, I owe a debt of gratitude to author Jeanne Meeks. Decades ago, a young man in his early twenties stood at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon staring out at the grandeur and dreaming about hiking the canyon from rim-to-rim. He was newly married, with a wife and nine-month-old child in tow, so his dream would have to wait. A few years later he stood at the North Rim, again longing to fulfill his dream, only this time he and his wife were traveling with four-year-old and six-month-old daughters. Again, his dream would have to wait. Alas, time and circumstances thwarted the dream, UNTIL he stumbled across a novel entitled "Rim To Rim: Death in the Grand Canyon." Being a lover of adventure stories and mysteries, the now much older dreamer bought the book and plunged in. I was that young dreamer, and older reader. And I have Jeanne Meeks to thank for finally fulfilling my dream of hiking the canyon rim-to-rim, although vicariously, through the pages of this wonderful debut novel.

Other reviewers have pretty much covered the synopsis of this adventure/mystery, so I won't go there. I will say that this is a story of a fifty-year-old woman who begins the journey from the North Rim with self-doubt and low self-esteem, and by the time she reaches the South Rim she has been transformed into to a strong and confident, 'I can do it!' person. But Amy's transformation is anything but easy. With the help of her new friend and hiking partner, Sarah, she reaches deep within herself to draw up physical and mental courage she never knew existed. Facing danger and death, she completes the journey triumphantly, bruised and battered, but with an inner strength and the resolve to begin her life anew. Rim To Rim is, in effect, a story of rebirth and renewal.

Between the covers lies a mystery which Amy unknowingly stumbles into as she arrives at the airport in Phoenix, Arizona. The mystery is finally resolved at the end of the arduous canyon trek, and all the loose ends are neatly tied together. There is also a romantic thread woven throughout the story which develops slowly due to Amy's reluctance to trust her heart after it has been trampled on and finally broken after twenty-nine years of marriage.

As mentioned before, this is an extraordinary first novel. I must share a particular passage which I feel is one of the most beautiful descriptive paragraphs I've read in my many years as an avid reader and writer. I only wish I'd composed the following words myself:

<< Neither one of us needed to fill the silence with conversation. The scenery was enough. The last rays of dying sun threw glorious colors against distant plateaus and mesas. Shadows loomed up from the depths and engulfed entire mountain ranges. Nature controlled the choreography, and we humans could only witness the drama. It was a humbling experience. We were intruders who had stumbled into a sacred ritual. >>

No purple prose or overdone description there. Just beautifully crafted writing from an author who has much to offer the reading public. I've already purchased Meeks' sequel, "Wolf Pack: Mystery on Isle Royale." I can't wait to dig into Amy and Sarah's next hiking adventure. I heartily and highly recommend "Rim To Rim: Death in the Grand Canyon" to anyone who enjoys mysteries and adventure tales. It's also a great Chick-Lit read, but believe me guys, you'll enjoy it too! Well done, Jeanne!

Rim To Rim Death in the Grand Canyon Backcountry Mysteries Book 1 edition by Jeanne Meeks Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

A solid 4 stars! I found I couldn't put this down--Meeks has done a great job of drawing in her readers to the two primary characters. I'm a real fan of the Anna Pigeon novels, and this one stacks right up there. I thought that might not be the case, but I was drawn in very effectively. Had to finish it in one day. I especially love (!!) the descriptions of the landscape and the effects it has on the women characters. They give voice--and silence--to the awesome beauty in a great and human way. I also like, for instance, that one of them is bought as nails, except when she sees blood. This is what makes them complex and completely human.
I had to read this being a Grand Canyon backpacker myself. (Four rim to rims among twenty-one GC backpacks so far.)
Distances, places and ranger details were not accurate. (Ribbon Falls is not a mile away from Bright Angel campground and there is more distance between Phantom Ranch and the BA campground than implied in the text, among some of the discrepancies.)
The groaner was the description of saguaro cactus near the GC. No! Not even close! Try Tucson instead.
Rim To Rim-Death in the Grand Canyon starts with a prologue that is every woman's nightmare. A husband you have given your best years to, leaves you a note saying he is done with you and wants a divorce. This is what happened to Amy Warren, and to top it all off he choose the one time that she would have needed his support the most. Amy had planned to cross hiking the Grand Canyon off her bucket list, the trip was to take place with her best friend Karen but as they say when it rains it pours and Karen had to beg off because of a car accident. Her first thought is that she could not do it alone, especially with her heart broken as it was.

She bucks up and rises to the occasion especially in light of the fact that her soon to be ex-husband had thrown in her face the challenge that she would ultimately fail in the attempt anyway. She meets an ally in the form of an outdoors woman named Sarah Rochon. Their chance meeting is the beginning of an adventure of a lifetime. The story moves swiftly, from the moment Sarah stops a man from stealing Amy's gear to the attempt on their lives in the canyon. The reader is drawn in to her every emotion and will celebrate her triumph at the end. A truly glorious read...pick it up and you will not stop until its done.
I wanted to read "Rim To Rim" because my husband took the same hike and I thought I'd gain insight to his adventure. Of course, the descriptions of the canyon were most welcome but the author caught my attention well beyond expectations as the plot unfolded and mysterious events drew me in.
The book held my interest and I'll gladly recommend Jeanne Meeks book to my book club.
I enjoyed trying to keep up with the various suspects and the plot twists and turns--even the romantic choices the young and more mature women characters became involved in, however. the lesbian angle seemed superfluous as did one scene of anger between these same friends, explained away to no end and easily dismissed.

Overall, I'm glad I got to read this tale I "saw" my husband's hike, rim to rim, through the author's fine descriptions as I had hoped--and enjoyed a good mystery as a bonus!
....poorly written. One ridiculous mishap after another to the main character. I am planning a Rim to Rim hike and why I purchased this book. I was really looking forward to reading it prior to the Rim to Rim.I brought it along with me as my "reading" for another trip I recently took ,mistake....I read the whole thing, but felt like I was reading something from a High School writing class.
